Gaps Down and New All-Time Highs

On 10/30/26 two of the three main U.S. stock indices gapped down while three S&P 500 sectors made new all-time highs.  This unusual combination implies near term bullishness for U.S. stocks.

The daily S&P 500 (SPX) and Nasdaq Composite (IXIC) charts courtesy of Trading View show their relationship since July 2026.

Their moves down on 10/30/26 are what captured the news headlines.  SPX declined 1.82%, IXIC fell 2.86%.  Both these indices encompass nearly all U.S. stocks; you would expect almost all U.S. stocks to be in declines.  Yet on 10/30/26 three S&P 500 sectors not only failed to decline, but they also made new – all-time highs.

The daily Health Care sector (XLV), Consumer Staples sector (XLP), and Energy sector (XLE) charts illustrate their recent action.

This chart is an update to what was shown in the 10/24/26 blog “U.S. Stock Sector Analysis – October 2026”.  The blog also noted. “The 10/18/26 blog “New U.S. Stock Market Leaders?” illustrated that only XLE and XLV were able to make new all-time highs.  Last week they were joined by the Consumer Staples sector. The stock bulls are gaining strength.”

The moves up in XLV and XLP are probably flights to quality.  This phenomenon occurs late in a stock bull market when stock fund managers sense bearishness in the broader economy/stock market.

With the recent decline in technology stocks, fund managers could be looking to place money with the highest quality companies.  Health care and consumer staples are essential products/services.

The Energy sector is rising because Crude Oil continues to climb.  The rise of energy prices could have an adverse effect on the U.S. economy and stock market.

A case could be made that the new highs in XLV, XLP, and XLE are blowoff tops and that they will quickly join the broader down trend.

This website next blog will examine internal stock market momentum that supports the theory for a near term rise of U.S. stocks.
